ABB Statement:
Demolishing the Bloomington ABB Plant
Jan 27, 2006

Plans are underway to demolish the Westinghouse/ABB plant in Bloomington with the completion of demolition planned for late summer of this year.

The demolition involves several steps and is subject to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) for any required PCB removal found in the interior of the structure. Building surface areas and materials contaminated with PCBs will be addressed before the demolition can actually begin. PCB contaminated materials will be handled according to regulations and transported off site to a permitted repository. After the demolition, the building rubble will be checked again for any PCB contamination and handled accord to the results received. The building slab, which is being checked for the presence of PCBs, will be addressed after the building has been removed.

Another step in the process will remove all asbestos material from the building before demolition begins. Asbestos was used primarily as insulation material for steam pipes and other heated water lines and was used for other construction materials, such as flooring and transite. The actual demolition will commence after materials considered harmful to human health and the environment are removed from the building for proper disposal.

The engineering company for the project is PSARA Technologies, Inc. (PSARA) of Cincinatti, Ohio. PSARA is handling preparations of plans and specifications on behalf of ABB. The bidding process is underway for highly qualified contractors to handle certain aspects of the project such as asbestos abatement. Remediation of subsurface PCB contamination will commence after all structures have been removed from the site. The plan is to complete all associated site cleanup work before the end of 2006. The property will then be available for redevelopment.
